Native to Toronto, Ontario, Robert Bateman had shown a considerable amount of skill and promise as a painter from a young age, as well as a marked interest in nature which would come to heavily influence his paintings. Robert Bateman began his art career painting nature and wildlife with a heavy representational style. Bateman would eventually move through various art styles, from impressionism and cubism, to abstract expressionism while still depicting nature and wildlife. He ultimately settled on realism, as he felt it to be the best style in which to represent the particularity of the planet Earth. It was under this style that Robert Bateman would come to establish himself as one of the foremost naturalist artists with a commitment to ecology and preservation.

Spending over 20 years as a high school teacher and painting in his free time, Robert Bateman’s art began to receive considerable critical acclaim and following by the 1970’s. His paintings began to be accrued by private and public collections. Eventually, Bateman was commissioned by the Governor General of Canadato create a painting as a wedding gift for HRH Prince Charles as a gift from Canada. If this work (as well as others that appeared in the collections of European royalty) did not establish him as a major player in the world of nature artists, a one-man museum show at the Smithsonian drawing a record breaking crowd certainly did. He has since been appointed an Officer in The Order of Canada.
