The Group of Seven was a collective of Canadian landscape painters consisting of: Frankling Carmichael, Lawren Harris, A.Y. Jackson, Franz Johnston, Arthur Lismer, J.E.H. MacDonald and Frederick Varley (and by extension, Tom Thomson and Emily Carr) who rose to prominence before and after the First World War. The Group saw their genesis around 1913, when several of the members met as employees of a local Toronto design firm, meeting often to mutually appreciate art and share their ideas. The wealthy Lawren Harris funded the construction of the now famous Studio Building in Toronto, which would come to serve as a meeting and working place for the Group of Seven. During this time, the group travelled around to remote regions of Ontario, which served as a grand source of inspiration. Their paintings magnificently captured the tranquility and majesty of the Canadian wilderness.

The Group of Seven disbanded temporarily during the First World War, but reunited when the war was concluded. At this time they began to travel all across Canada, painting landscapes from coast to coast. The Group of Seven's works contain elements of 19th centry Impressionist art.
