Maurits Cornelis (M.C.) Escher was a famous Dutch graphic artist born on July 17th, 1898 in Leeuwarden, The Netherlands. Escher specialized in drawing and printmaking, as well as mathematically inspired woodcuts, lithographs, and tapestries. With his father being a prominent civil engineer, it is clear to see where Escher’s mathematic artistry may have originated. Despite not faring well in high school, save for drawing classes, M.C. Escher went on to study at the Haarlem School of Architecture and Decorative Arts, studying both architecture and decorative arts.

After finishing school, M.C. Escher took a trip to Italy, where he would eventually live. Escher was very inspired by the beauty of the Italian countryside and architecture. It is here that many of Escher’s sketches were drawings and prints were made. M.C. Escher eventually moved back up north due to Italy’s tense political climate in the 1930’s. Here he would work steadily and intently until his death in 1972.
M.C. Escher was well known for his prints which featured impossible constructions, taking advantage of the quirks of perception and perspective. Some of Escher’s best known prints were “Drawing Hands”, “Belvedere”(featuring the Necker Cube optical illusion) and “Waterfall”(featuring the Penrose Triangle illusion).
