Pierre-Auguste Renoir was a French painter who helped pioneer the Impressionist art movement. Born in Limoges,France in 1841 and moved to Paris when he was 4. Renoir fostered his artistic ability from a young age and by 13 he was working as an apprentice painting in a porcelain shop. During these years Renoir greatly refined his painting ability. Although originally finding great difficulty with getting his art noticed, it wasn’t until Renoir started experimenting with Impressionism (along with the likes of Claude Monet and Alfred Sisley) that he really came into his own.

Impressionist painters began painting outdoors, which at the time was considered to be quite revolutionary. Renoir really enjoyed the impressionist style, and you will find that many of his paintings typically consist of realistic outdoor scenes of people enjoying themselves, with very faithful recreations of natural light; a window into the lives of people of the time. As Renoir aged, his paintings began to explore different styles, such as classicism. In his older age, he became stricken with arthritis, but still painted until his death in 1919; truly a testament to his passion as an artist.
