Madame X Print John Singer Sargent
$23.00 – $209.00
Description
John Singer Sargent’s Portrait of Madame X, completed in 1884, is a portrait of Parisian socialite Virginie Amélie Avegno Gautreau. While this work reflects Gautreau’s elegance and the beauty standards of the period, it caused a great controversy at the Paris Salon where it was first exhibited. The strap detail sliding from her shoulder was deemed “inappropriate” and caused Sargent to leave Paris.
In the work, Madame Gautreau is elegantly attired in a black, deeply decollete dress. The contrast of pale skin tone, dark background and dress emphasizes the figure. Sargent’s mastery of light and shadow gives Madame Gautreau a sculptural appearance. The strap detail, which initially caused controversy, was corrected by the artist.
Today, Madame X is on display at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York. This work is considered a turning point in the art of portraiture.
