Hans Baldung Grien

or 1485 It is thought Baldung was born at Schwäbisch Gmünd in Swabia.

Baldung is a member of Dürer’s workshop in Nuremberg. His nickname – Grien – seems to have dated from this period perhaps denoting his favourite colour.

He produces designs for stained-glass windows at three Nuremberg churches.

When Dürer leaves Nuremberg for his second visit to Italy, he leaves his workshop in Baldung’s care.

Baldung moves to Halle where he has received two substantial commissions.

Baldung settles in Strasbourg.

Baldung marries and joins the artists guild. He becomes fascinated by the subject of witches and produces many drawing and woodcuts on this theme from this date.

Baldung receives a prestigious commission from the cathedral at Freiburg im Breisgau for a folding altarpiece comprising 11 monumental paintings.

Baldung returns to Strasbourg
